Diceman’s DBA Armies

At the regular Friday nite game session this week, Keith ran a small Zulu Wars game using The Flame and the Sword rules. I, of course was the lone “plucky British Sawjeant” who was tasked with defending the farmhouse and well from those evil savages. Noted Anglophile that I am meant this was a no-brainer, and the other guys (Neal, Larry, and Keith) began honing their assegais to razor sharpness. At first attempt to shoot, I was slightly out of range (24″ in these rules), but Larry C. taunted me with a special rule for this time only..the “you couldn’t hit an elephant at this range” rule: if I rolled boxcars I could kill/wound one of his Zulus. Of COURSE I rolled two sixes with my brand spankin new .577/450 Martini-Henry!! Sjt. Baier makes his shot

The rest of the game went as normal, though…not enough shots from the Brits to stop the orcs (uh..Zulus) from the human wave attack. Sjt. Baier is defeated!

The demise of the Brits

(P)Tom Graves’ report on the Battle of the Crossroads is posted on the GLADBAG (Great Lakes DBA Gamers) site here:

Thanks again for the great time we had there, guys…

Four of us from Pittsburgh ( Steve Parillo, Kevin Serafini, Larry Chaban and I) made the trip to this GLADBAG DBA event in Cambridge Ohio.

It was an interesting idea with some campaign aspects. The first game was one-on-one, normal DBA. The twist is that the winner now made the loser his “subject” (thought I was gonna say the “B” word, huh???) , and losses were carried to the next round. Unfortunately for me, I won 4:3 so now my partnership had only 17 elements instead of 24!

The next battle was a double DBA battle with two teams of two players fighting. We lost here, and I lost 4 of my elements. Now my sad Ayyubid contingent was down to 5 for the final round…

The last round saw two 4-man teams facing off and our side was heavily outnumbered. We tried, but went down to defeat when our CIC was trapped and killed by the enemy.

Pittsburgh was well-represented, though, with Larry and Kevin taking 1st and 2nd place!

Our thanks to the hosting GLADBAG group, and the event organizers John Loy and Tom Graves.

Some photos I took can be seen here:

First is Nick Gillispie using III/33 Early Muslim North Africa and Sicily. Next are views of the gaming area. Then Tim Ryan and Bob Boggs, our team opponents. The next five shots are of the final “Big Battle” 4 on 4 game, with my remnant Ayyubids trying to hold the left flank against Evil Steve Parillo <G>. Last is Larry Chaban picking his winner’s prize.
