Just finished a good read: “The Trojan War a New History” by Barry Strauss (ISBN-10 0-7432-6442-8). It’s not a dry history book as the author make the protagonists really come alive. The background of the Trojan War is explained, and a lot of the “nuts and bolts” of the ancient Near East are explored. Watch the movie, then read this!

Mike Demana won the Open event. Diceman (!) won the Book IV event. Dave Zecchini won the “Best Painted Army” award. Legions Hobbies also extended 20% off on everything to all attendees, so everyone got loot!

Horde wars at Cold Wars

From the lobby of the Lancaster Host: Twenty players showed up for this running of Horde Wars the day before the convention begins! First place went to John Manning playing Neo-Assyrians with 2 hordes. Second was Jonathan Bostwick with Italian Lombard. John Loy got the “balls” award for killing an element in each of his three games with a horde.

Ok gang, it’s the nite before Cold Wars! Did I pack everything? (Last con I forgot our triple army for teams!) Hopefully I’ll be able to blog from the site with updated results for the events. Larry Chaban and I are running the first event…Horde Wars at Cold War Thursday nite. Hopefully I’ll post some pics too. See ya in Lancaster!!

Zulu night in Pittsburgh

At the regular Friday nite game session this week, Keith ran a small Zulu Wars game using The Flame and the Sword rules. I, of course was the lone “plucky British Sawjeant” who was tasked with defending the farmhouse and well from those evil savages. Noted Anglophile that I am meant this was a no-brainer, and the other guys (Neal, Larry, and Keith) began honing their assegais to razor sharpness. At first attempt to shoot, I was slightly out of range (24″ in these rules), but Larry C. taunted me with a special rule for this time only..the “you couldn’t hit an elephant at this range” rule: if I rolled boxcars I could kill/wound one of his Zulus. Of COURSE I rolled two sixes with my brand spankin new .577/450 Martini-Henry!!

The rest of the game went as normal, though…not enough shots from the Brits to stop the orcs (uh..Zulus) from the human wave attack. Sjt. Baier is defeated!
